WESTPORT, Conn. Staples boys basketball team faces a critical stretch of games as tries to land a berth in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference and Class LL tournaments.
Staples battled Westhill Friday in a tight game before losing 67-58 and falling to 7-7 on the season and 6-6 in the conference. Peter Rankowitz scored a career high 30 points for the Wreckers, and Mike Argosh added 14. Staples trailed by two points with just under three minutes remaining before the Vikings pulled away.
The Wreckers need just one more victory in their final six regular season games to earn a berth in the state tournament. The road to the conference tournament, however, figures to be much harder.
Staples is currently tied for 10th in the race for one of eight spots in the conference tournament. The Wreckers have a key game Tuesday against Danbury, which is one game ahead of Staples in the league standings.
Of Staples remaining six games , five are against teams that are also locked in the battle for playoff spots. Staples meets Trumbull (6-6 in the league) Friday, and also has games slated against Greenwich, Ridgefield, Brien McMahon and Bassick.
Rankowitz leads the team in scoring with 16.4 points per game. Argosh is averaging 14.35, and James Frusciante 9.71. Staples has lost three of its last four heading into Tuesdays game against Danbury.
