Staples' boys soccer tuned up for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoffs Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over Bassick in its final regular season game. The Wreckers (13-2-1) finish as the league's No. 2 seed and will host Trumbull in the first round of the playoffs Friday at 3 p.m. Trumbull handed Staples one of its two losses earlier this year, a 3-1 decision on Sept. 16.
Court Lake's tally in the 17th minute staked Staples to a 1-0 lead. Greg Gudis scored two minutes into the second half. Harry Birch headed in a corner kick by Dylan Hoy, and Max Hoberman converted a feed from Taylor McNair.
Staples' junior varsity team finished up its season with a 12-1-1 mark with a 2-0 victory. Jon Denowitz scored both goals with assists from Terence Gibbons and Jay Kaplan.
In other first-round FCIAC playoff games on Friday, top-seeded Norwalk hosts New Canaan; third-seeded Greenwich plays Wilton and fourth-seeded Fairfield Warde meets No. 5 Ridgefield.
