Staples Beats Danbury to Stay Unbeaten

WESTPORT, Conn. – Nick Kelly ran for two touchdowns to lead Staples to a 31-12 win over Danbury in the Wreckers’ home opener.

Danbury built a 21-0 lead entering the final quarter before the Hatters scored a pair of touchdowns, including an 89-yard kickoff return by James Harrington.

Staples took its early lead Saturday on a 38-yard run by Joey Zelkowitz, a 4-yard run by Kelly and Jack Massie’s 1-yard run. Kelly added a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Robbie Wolf kicked four extra points and a 23-yard field goal for the Wreckers.

Staples also silenced Danbury’s offense, allowing the Hatters just 42 passing yards and 146 rushing yards. Danbury fell to 2-3.

The Wreckers enter a critical part of their schedule with their next three games against noteworthy opponents. Staples plays at Trumbull on Friday, and then meets Darien on Oct. 29 in a battle of teams that are currently undefeated. Staples also plays Fairfield Warde on Nov. 5 before finishing up with Westhill and Greenwich.

Staples is currently ranked third in the Class LL state tournament rankings behind  Conard and Xavier.
