The Staples High School baseball team knew all along this is where it belongs. After a red-hot start, Staples stumbled toward the end of the season. The Wreckers finished their conference schedule at 13-5, settling for the fourth seed in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoffs .
Two dominant pitching performances in the quarterfinals and semifinals have led Staples back to the championship game for the fourth time in six years. Staples won back-to-back conference titles in 2008 and 2009, both over Westhill High School.
"One through nine, this team can hit," Staples infielder Bryan Terzian after Thursday's semifinal victory. "We execute when we need to, and we have to bring that intensity and that mentality into the championship game."
The Wreckers will take on an upstart Danbury team, playing in just its second FCIAC title game in school history. The Hatters' only appearance came in 2003 when they defeated Trumbull.
Staples will likely go with No. 3 starter Terzian on the mound, but ace Rob Gau is available out of the bullpen if needed. The FCIAC baseball championship begins at noon at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.
