Tyler Jacobs had two hits and three RBIs as Staples defeated St. Joseph, 5-4, on Friday to clinch its fourth straight Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoff berth.
Jim Kopack (4-1) got the win for the Wreckers with relief help from Bryan Terzian and Rob Gau. Staples improved to 13-4 overall and 12-4 in the FCIAC.
After the Cadets scored two in the top of the first, Staples answered with three of its own. The Wreckers added two more in the third. St. Joseph got two in the sixth before Terzian and Gau snuffed out the Cadets' rally.
Staples is currently seeded third in the race for the FCIAC playoffs. The Wreckers play Fairfield Ludlowe and Greenwich next week in their final regular season games. They also play Norwich Free Academy Saturday at 1 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies begin at noon.
