WESTPORT, Conn. – Henry Wynne won the 1,600 at the Irv Black Relays and pole-vaulter Lexie Schachne had a strong performance in two meets to highlight performances by Staples track and field athletes.
Wynne ran the event in 4:14.30, followed by Clark Shurtleff of Amity in 4:14.38. Wynne’s winning time is the best in the state this spring, and 46th in the country. It also betters his best performance indoors this winter by nearly 10 seconds.
Schachne's winning vault at the Black meet was 11 feet, 6 inches. The Harvard-bound jumper also soared 11 feet, 9 ¾ inches to take ninth place at the prestigious Penn Relays.
In other highlights from the Black meet, pole vaulter Dean Hefnawy won with a leap of 13 feet, 6 inches. The 4 x 800 relay won with Walker Marsh, Patrick Nolan, Mikolaj Kulis and Wynne in 8:12.75. The 4 x 400 relay took first with Max Hoberman, Giles Bonner, Wynne and Jon Heil. They ran 3:28.75. The boys 4 x 800 junior varsity relay also won with Yousef Shahin, Matthew Marshall, Scott Pecoriello and Peter Elkind.
For the girls, the 4 x 800 relay of Tyler Scanlin, Courtney Mullen, Erica Hefnawy and Alera Popkin took second, while the distance medley relay of Georgia Kursten, Emily Troelstra, Hefnawy and Caroline Koenig took third.
