Staples Athletes Set Marks at State Track Meet

Staples athletes set meet and school records in a terrific performance at Saturday's Class LL track and field championships at the New Haven Athletic Center. The boys team finished second, the girls team third.

The boys set a meet record in the 4x400 relay, winning the event in 3:29:07. Jonathan Heil, John Roche, Sean Gallagher and Raphael Ray took down the old mark of 3:29.69, set last year by Hamden. The time was about five seconds off the school mark set earlier this year.

Dean Hefnawy won the pole vault for the Wreckers, clearing 12 feet. He was the only individual winner for the Wreckers.

Staples set a school record with a second place finish in the 4x800 relay. Walker Marsh, Roche, Jeff Caffery and Henry Wynne ran 8:05.38, and lost by less than a second to Hamden. The team broke a five-year-old school mark. Will Caffery, Jeff's brother, was on the team that held the previous mark.

The 4x200 relay also took second with George Birch, Giles Bonner, Max Hoberman and Zachary Mitchell. Ray took second in the 600 and fourth in the 300 to highlight other individual performances. Wynne (fifth, 1600) and Matt Mula (fifth, pole vault) also picked up individual points for Staples. Danbury won the meet with 66 points, while Staples had 53.

The girls team, which finished third behind Glastonbury and Danbury, also set some impressive records.

Lexie Schachne won the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, 6 inches and establishing meet and school records. Staples' other individual victory came from sophomore Turner Block, who captured the 300 in 42.67.

Ingrid Johnson broke her own school record in the 600, finishing third in 1:39.05.

Staples took second in the 4x400 meter relay with Block, Courtney Mullen, Emily Hanrahan and Johnson. They ran 4:10.5 and trailed only Glastonbury, which won in 4:10.24. Staples also took fourth in the 4x800 with Hanrahan, Mullen, Alexandra Popkin and Kristen Weiler. The sprint medley unit of Kelley Hussey, Elizabeth Driscoll, Johnson and Maeve Flaherty grabbed fifth. Hussey added a sixth place finish in the 55 meter dash.

Staples will compete in the State Open Saturday at New Haven. Complete results are available online .
