St. Joseph outscored Staples 30-18 over the second and third quarters Monday night en route to a 70-60 victory in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference. The Cadets improved to 15-1 overall and 13-1 in the league. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for Staples, which fell to 13-5 and 12-4.
St. Joseph led 16-14 after the first quarter, then edged out to a 30-23 lead at halftime. The Cadets were up 46-32 after three quarters and held off a Staples surge in the final period.
Gabe Seidman scored 13 points for the Wreckers, while Luke Yeager and Peter Rankowitz added 11 apiece. Timjah Parker and Brandon Jones scored 16 apiece for St. Joseph, while Oscar Assie added 15.
Staples owns a half-game lead over Westhill in the race for the FCIAC West Division title. Westhill (11-4) has three conference games remaining, while the Wreckers have two. Staples returns to the court next Monday to meet Fairfield Ludlowe and closes the regular season on Feb. 23 against Greenwich.
