WESTPORT, Conn. Teams from Fairfield County and beyond kicked soccer balls for two straight days at the Westport Invitational Soccer tournament at Staples High School.
The tournament for teams ages 9-18 started Saturday with girls games. The boys played Sunday. Children ages 9-11 played indoor games at the Staples fieldhouse, while the older groups played on the high school football field. The tournament is hosted by the Westport Soccer Association.
The Westport Blue under-13 girls lost in the championship game to Simmons, 2-1, after defeating the top-seeded CFC Fury, 3-2, in the semifinals. Westport Blue, coached by Jen Larson, went 1-1-1 in pool play, including a 3-2 win against the Fairfield Lightning, a 1-1 tie against the Norwalk Sonics and a 5-0 loss to Simmons.
Proceeds from the 32nd annual tournament benefit the Coleman Brothers Foundation , which is named after two brothers from Westport who died in terrorist attacks on New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. Keith and Scott Coleman were longtime players in the Westport Soccer Association.
The other tournament champions were U11 Girls, Wilton Blue Wolverines; U12 Girls, Madison Tigers; U14 Girls, Westport Blue; U17/18, Simmons Golden Eagles; U11 boys, Everton; U12 Boys, Norwalk Junior Soccer Association Blue Wolves; U13 Boys, Norwalk Community Soccer Club Panthers; U14 Boys, Southeast PSC; and U17/18 Boys, Norwalk Junior Soccer Association Tornadoes.
