Saugatuck Crews From Westport Win 9 Medals At Regionals

WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Westport-based Saugatuck Rowing Club junior team had a successful weekend at the Northeast Regional Championships in Lowell, Mass. Girls coach Chase Graham and boys coach Sharon Kriz led the team to three gold and six bronze medals and had seven crews qualify for next month's U.S. Youth National Championships.

“It’s been a fantastic season for the Saugatuck team, and our success this weekend is a testament to the quality of all of our athletes,” said Graham.

The girls varsity eight won the gold medal with Louisa Freeman and Anna Petterson of Westport, Connor Cashel and Lily Powers of Fairfield, Felicity Cain of Darien, Emily Patton of Guilford, Mary Beth Greer of Wilton, Jo Gurman of Weston, and Christina Johnson of Redding.

Jo Gurman and Christina Johnson also placed first  in the varsity double event. The varsity eight and the varsity double will be competing in the Youth National Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., in June.

The girls novice four also won their event, with Lelia Boley, Katie Craymer, Cara Macdonald, and Carly Lenihan of Westport, and Lily McGonagle of Fairfield.

In third place was the boys’ quad with Cameron Yates of Fairfield, Jeff Monahan and Christoph Bub of Westport, and Nick Balderston of Wilton. Jeff Monahan also won the bronze in the varsity single with a time of 7:32.1.

The boys’ lightweight eight placed third with Lauren Hochman of Fairfield, Connor O’Brien of Easton, Chris Fincher, Jack Craymer, Nicholas Amato, Warren Schorr, John Andrews, and Lucas Manning of Westport, and Drew Senesac of Ridgefield.

The boys four placed third with John Hunter of Westport, Lee Glicklich of Ridgefield, Nick Upton of Redding, Wit Geffs of Greenwich, and Cooper Pellaton of Wilton.

Also in third was the girls’ lightweight eight with Genevieve Esse of Fairfield, Kaitlyn McCann of Ridgefield, Alex Manning, Lexi Bralver, and Nica Wardell of Westport, Victoria Thorogood of Wilton, Felicity Cain, and Mary Beth Greer.

The girls’ lightweight eight and boys quad, single, lightweight eight, and varsity four will all compete at the Youth National Championships in June.

Also placing third was the girls junior varsity quad of Amra Sabovic of Wilton, Erika Zadravec of Fairfield, and Alison Morrison and Sammie Kurtz of Westport.

“We’re very excited to be sending so many Saugatuck rowers to nationals this year, and hope to continue this success in Tennessee,” said Kriz.
