Staples grad Mike Samela grabbed first team honors in the New England Small College Athletic Conference after leading Amherst College to a 21-11 record.
Samela, a sophomore catcher, hit .381 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs. He also scored 29 runs, and his .753 slugging percentage is the second best in school history. Samela also had a terrific year defensively, as he has thrown out nine base runners (30 percent) to rank second in the category among catchers in the conference. Samela boasts a .974 fielding percentage, committing only four errors in 151 chances. Amherst is awaiting word on a possible berth in the NCAA Tournament. The selections will be announced Sunday.
Westport's Ryan Healy led Amherst in victories with six. He is a junior who played at Salisbury School. New Canaan's Nolan Stewart is a freshman at Amherst.
