REDDING, Conn. -- Redding's Brooklee Han skated to a career high in the short program Thursday and earned a berth in the finals of the World Figure Skating Championships in London, Ontario.

Han, a 17-year-old senior at Joel Barlow High School, skates for Australia. This is her debut in the world championships.

Han scored a personal best of 50.62 points in the short program and is in 20th place, according to the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia . Skating to "Freedom" and "Titanic," she landed a triple toe/double toe-loop combination, a triple loop and a double Axel along with her trademark spins and fast-paced footwork. Han trains in Newington with Serhii Vaypan.

She skated to personal bests in both her short and free programs at the Four Continents Championships in February in Osaka, Japan. Han followed up with a 16th place finish at the Junior World Championships a few weeks ago in Milan, Italy, in the lead up to this week’s world championships.

Reigning Olympic champion Yu-Na Kim of South Korea is the leader after the short program with 69.97 points.

The finals will be Saturday. After a draw, Han is slated to skate first of 24 senior ladies.
