Peter's Spirits Advances in Playoffs

For the first time over six years, Peter's Spirits won their second playoff game in one season, coming back late to defeat the Wild Things 10-5 in thrilling fashion, and remaining undefeated in this year's playoffs.

After a scoreless crisp first two innings, the Wild Things broke through with thre runs in the third. The game stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth, when Peter's finally struck. A single by Mary Asphar and a double by Val Saltzman put runners on seconed and third with one out. A sacrifice fly by Julie Baisley and a key two-out single by Heidi Keeney brought two runs in for Peter's, trimming the deficit to one.

Each team both scored once in the fifth, leaving the score 4-3 Wild Things heading into the sixth.

After escaping a jam in the top half of the frame, Peter's came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. One out singles by Mary Asphar and Kelly Saltzgaber put runners on first and second and Val Saltzman delivered again with a game-tying double, putting the go ahead run on third. Julie Baisley put Peter's ahead for the first time in the game, coming through with a two-run single and giving Peter's a 6-4 lead. A walk to Heidi Keeney and an infield single by Amy Mirchandani loaded the bases. After getting a pop up for the second out, it appeared the Wild Things might get out of the inning only down two runs. A drive by Kathleen O'Connell cleared the bases when the Wild Things outfielder couldn't come up with the tough chance. A two-out single by Lauren Abrams plated the final run for Peter's, giving them a 10-4 lead heading into the final frame.

In the top half of the seventh,  Wild Things, cut the deficit with a massive homer to left. However, that was all they were to get, as Peter's pitcher Karen Constant shut them down the rest of the way, and Peter's escaped with a comeback 10-5 victory. Eileen Poulopoulous, garnered Peter's MVP honors and the gnome mascot that goes along with it, for getting on base every time up and making three key grabs in the outfield.
