OT Thriller Sends Staples Hockey to Semis

The Staples High School hockey team is moving on to the state semifinals, and it is thanks to an unexpected source. Sophomore Wyatt Fern scored just his second goal of the season less than two minutes into overtime of Thursday's Division III quarterfinal. The goal propelled the Wreckers to a 4-3 win over St. Bernard-Bacon-NFA at Northford Ice Pavilion.

Fern stole the puck at the blue line, catching the St. Bernard defenders off guard. He raced unopposed toward the net, sneaking a wrist shot into the high corner of the cage.

Staples will take on Windsor-East Granby-Avon in the Division III state semifinals Tuesday, March 15, at 7 p.m. The game will be held at Ingalls Rink in New Haven.
