Martime was awarded The Heebink Bowl, which is presented to the club with the best winning record of the day. Maritime rowers hail from Norwalk, Westport, Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Ridgefield, Westchester County, Fairfield and Stamford.
Points are awarded to the winners of each race, according to the size of the boat – one point for singles, two points for doubles, four for quadruple sculls or four-person sweep boats and eight points for eight-person sweep boats.
Twenty-seven clubs from the Northeast fielded 208 boats to compete in the event, which took place under relatively calm and overcast skies, perfect conditions for the 1000-meter sprint races. Masters rowers are, by definition, anyone aged 21 or over. Races are grouped according to age; where there are rowers of different age categories. Time handicaps are applied.
Maritime took first place in the following categories: Women’s double sculls, women’s quadruple scull, men’s quadruple scull, mixed quadruple scull, and women’s eight-sweep.
“The team has trained hard and it shows," said masters coach Anna Cherednikova.
The win continues a highly successful season for Maritime, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Earlier this spring, the junior teams took first and second place at US Rowing’s Youth National Championships. This earned them a spot at the highly competitive international competition at Henley Regatta, where they made it to the quarterfinals.
Also earlier this year, two Maritime alumni, Andrew Campbell and Charlie Cole, qualified for seats on the US Olympic Rowing team. Cole, who won a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics, will compete again in the coxless four, while Campbell will go to his first Olympics in the lightweight double.
