FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Whether youre a runner or a triathlete, this weekend is a good time to get moving into the summer racing season. Road races will be held in Norwalk and New Canaan on Saturday, and ambitious athletes can turn around Sunday and compete in a triathlon in Westport. There is also a Sunday morning run in Rowayton.
First up Saturday is the opening race in the Lightfoot Summer Series , a three-mile event beginning at 8 a.m. at Norwalk High. The 35th annual series includes races of 5, 7, 9 and 11 miles throughout the summer. It concludes with the Sam Elpern Half Marathon in September. Runners can register online or on the day of the race. Saturdays race is also ideal for walkers.
Runners who make a quick recovery can rest up to race in New Canaan later in the day. The New Canaan Mile begins at 6 p.m. at the New Balance Store at 128 Main St. The race benefits the New Canaan High Scholarship Fund. Runners can register online through Friday. Race day registration begins at 9 a.m. at the New Balance Store.
The Sherwood Island Sprint Triathlon starts Sunday at 6:30 a.m. The second annual race is sponsored by Targetraining of Westport and includes a half-mile swim, 13-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. It is the first of several triathlons over the summer in lower Fairfield County.
The Rowayton Community Center hosts a 2.2-mile and 4.4-mile fun run on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The shorter course is particularly suited for young runners. Entrants can register the day of the event.
