New Canaan's Campbell Advances To Olympic Semifinals

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- New Canaan’s Andrew Campbell and teammate Joshua Konieczny advanced to the semifinals with a second-place finish Monday in their first race in the lightweight double sculls at the Summer Olympics.

Campbell and Konieczny finished second behind Norway in the second heat. The top two crews in each heat advanced to Wednesday’s semifinals at the Games, which are being held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

The U.S. crew finished in 6:26:56. Norway won in 6:24:81. The Norwegians jumped out to an early lead. Campbell and Knoieczny stayed solidly in second throughout the race. Chile finished third, more than 12 seconds behind the Americans.

Ireland, Italy, France, Poland, Great Britain and South Africa also advanced to the semifinals, which will be held at 8:10 a.m. on Wednesday. Campbell and Konieczny posted the seventh fastest time among the eight teams that reached the semifinals. The finals will be held on Friday.
