WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Westport 8th Grade Wreckers ran into an old nemesis, New Canaan, on Sunday at Staples High School Stadium and despite a solid effort, the opposing team prevailed, in a Fairfield County Football League game.
Captains Bobby Becker, Evan Gilland and Jackson Ward led the Wreckers against the New Canaan Black. Despite the solid efforts of Joe Tuccinardi, Jonathon Maragos, Colin Hoy, Jack Griffin, Connor Adrian, Jack Zapfel, Brandon Schock and Sam Ahlgrim, New Canaan scored on its first three offensive drives.
The Westport offense led by Daniel Cozzi, Jack Schenck, Harry Garber, Ray Niver, Steve Warshavsky, Ryan Nicholas, Sam Arciola and Matty Johnson moved the ball well but was forced to punt on the first few drives of the half.
The Wreckers' offense showed poise in the second half with Gilland running for a first down on the first possession, then moved the ball well into New Canaan territory. The defense shut down the New Canaan offense with excellent line play by Becker, Ward, Niver, Matthew Flinn and Zach Arvanitis and solid tackling by Connor Adrian, Gilland, Zapfel, Hoy, Griffin and Ben Thaw.
Evan Gilland intercepted a New Canaan pass late in the game and returned it into NC territory but the Wreckers were not able to capitalize before time ran out. The next game is under the lights against New Canaan Red in Dunning Stadium.
