McCarthy, Gau Spark Staples to 12-1 Blowout

The Staples High School baseball team was in desperate need of an offensive explosion on Wednesday. The Wreckers had scuffled over their past six games, going 2-4 and had the task of taking on a Wilton team that had won eight of its last nine games.

The Staples team that began the year unbeaten through the first 10 games finally seemed to return against Wilton. The Wreckers rode the momentum of a three-run laser beam of a home run by first baseman Colin McCarthy to a 12-1 victory over the Warriors.

"Recently things have been a little iffy, but our two-strike swings were really good today," McCarthy said. "We didn't swing at bad pitches and we got the clutch hits that we needed."

For an inning it looked like the scuffling would continue when Staples' starter Rob Gau walked the first batter he faced. Wilton took a quick 1-0 lead on an Evan Roux RBI groundout. The frustrations for Staples continued when Roux robbed Scott twice with incredible, fully-extended, diving catches.

That would be all the offense Gau would allow, however, as the Wreckers' ace would not allow a Wilton runner past first base for the rest of the game. Gau shut down the Warriors' offense, which has averaged over seven runs a game this season. He scattered four hits, struck out six, and walked only one in a complete-game effort.

After McCarthy's blast in the third inning gave the Wreckers their first lead, Staples blew the game wide open in the fifth. They sent 11 men to the plate, scoring six times. Bryan Terzian led the attack for Staples, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

"This was a big game, but every game is a big game for us from now on," Terzian said. "This was a weight off of us. We know we're a great hitting team and this is what we needed to do."

Staples (12-4, 11-4 FCIAC) began the season at the top and will try to get back to the top when it hosts the top-ranked team in the conference, St. Joseph, on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
