Kopack Shines, But Staples Baseball Falls

WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples High baseball suffered its second loss of the season Thursday, wasting a stellar outing from ace pitcher Jimmy Kopack . The Wreckers left seven runners on base while struggling to solve Wilton lefty Garrett Furnivall. A Warriors sacrifice fly counted as the game’s only offense, as Staples fell, 1-0.

Furnival overcame four walks, a hit batter and two Wilton errors, wiggling his way out of several jams. The Wreckers failed to score with men on first and third in the first and on second and third with just one out in the fifth.

Wilton’s 6-foot-6 ace struck out Staples cleanup hitter Brian Terzian to escape that jam and Staples did not threaten again.

Kopack took the tough-luck loss in a frustrating game for the Wreckers. He struck out eight, walked two and scattered four hits, but a wild pitch set up Zack Ellenthal’s game-winning sacrifice fly.

Staples (11-2) travels to Westhill on Friday for a 4 p.m. game.
