Haggerty Helps Team USA Win Pair

Stamford's Ryan Haggerty scored Team USA's first goal Thursday in a 2-1 win over Switzerland in the first game of the International Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship. Team USA also won Friday, 8-1, over Slovakia in the tournament, which is being played in Germany. Westport's Michael Paliotta is a defenseman for Team USA.

Haggerty also scored in Friday's victory over Slovakia. The former standout at Trinity Catholic High also picked up a goal and an assist in Team USA's 4-2 exhibition win over Finland in a game leading into the tournament.

Team USA plays Russia on Sunday and Germany on Tuesday. The quarterfinals begin April 21. The championship game is scheduled for April 24. Team USA is the defending champion.

Haggerty, who has committed to play next year at RPI, has eight goals and 17 assists in 46 games for Team USA. Paliotta has 13 points in 52 games. Hockey fans can follow Team USA on the U.S. Hockey website.
