GREENWICH, Conn. -- Greenwich resident and former Greens Farms Academy star Sean Obi, a freshman basketball player at Rice University, was named Tuesday to the Conference USA All-Freshman team.

Rice's season ended Tuesday with a first-round loss to North Texas in the C-USA Tournament. The Owls went 7-23 this season.

Obi finished second on the team in scoring with 11.4 points per game and led C-USA during the regular season with a 9.3 rebounding average. He also ranked third in the league with a 59.6 field goal percentage and second in C-USA with 11 double-doubles.

Obi, who came to live in Greenwich from Nigeria, ranks among the national freshman leaders in numerous categories as well. He stands second in both rebounds and double-doubles, trailing only Kentucky’s Julius Randle.

Obi was named C-USA Freshman of the Week on Nov. 25 for his first double-double in the win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and strong outing against Princeton, as he averaged 12.5 points and 10.0 rebounds on the week.

He posted career highs with 25 points and 19 rebounds in the triple-overtime win over South Alabama. He’s already etched his name into the Rice record book, standing ninth in single-season double-doubles and 10th in career 20-point/10-rebound games, with two. His second such performance came against Marshall as he tallied 22 points and 17 boards.

Obi scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Rice's loss on Tuesday.
