Greens Farms Academy varsity softball played an excellent Fairchester Athletic Association game against Holy Child . And despite solid batting and consistent pitching from Holy Child, GFA won, 15-11 to improve its record to 5-3.
Holy Child came out hitting, scoring two runs in the first inning, but GFA battled right back, scoring two runs off singles by Sarah Young and Brooke Cirillo. The game remained close: Holy Child scored four in the second, and GFA tied it up; Holy Child scored one in the third, and again, GFA tied it up.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning thanks to solid defensive plays by both teams. Holy Child scored three in the fifth, but he Dragons scored four times in the bottom of the inning off a single RBI by Jacqui Young (who was 4 for 4 on the day), a stellar bunt by Avery Swett, a single from Miranda Princi, and RBI walks to Idalia Friedson and Molly Murphy.
The Dragons held Holy Child scoreless in the sixth, thanks to two great plays by Princi, including a beautiful relay throw to Cirillo to tag out a runner at home plate. Cirillo unfortunately was hurt on the play, but her efforts kept Holy Child off the board and fired up GFA.
In the bottom of the sixth, GFA came out hitting. A single by Jacqui Young, another great bunt by Swett, and a single by Princi left the bases loaded for Friedson. Friedson powered a hit to right field and motored around the bases for a grand slam that ended up being the difference in the game. The Dragons held HC to just one run in the top of the ninth thanks to another great relay throw from Princi, this time to Alexa Sullivan behind the plate, who held on for the out.
