Brandon Bonilla, a Greenwich native and son of former New York Met Bobby Bonilla, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 25th round of the draft. It was the second time Bonilla, a left-handed pitcher, was drafted. He was selected by the Rockies in the 37th round of the 2011 draft, but he decided to attend college instead.
Bonilla played youth baseball and his first two years of high school ball in Greenwich before moving to Florida. He is currently a junior at Grand Canyon University.
The Cleveland Indians selected Staples High School graduate David Speer of Westport in the 27th round of the draft. Now a senior at Columbia University, Speer, a left-handed pitcher, has posted a 1.86 earned run average in the Ivy League this season.
On the final day of the draft, Brunswick School graduate Bradley Wilpon was selected in the 36th round by the Boston Red Sox. Wilpon is the son of New York Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon.
Wilpon, a right-handed pitcher, is currently committed to the University of Pennsylvania.
Kyle Dunster became just the fifth Greenwich High School student to be drafted out of high school after being taken by the New York Mets in the 38th round. Dunster is the second Greenwich High student in as many years to be drafted after his former teammate, Taylor Olmstead, snapped a 15-year draft drought for the school last year.
Dunster, a right-handed pitcher, is committed to play at Boston College.
The last player with Fairfield County ties selected in the draft was Bethel High School graduate and right-handed pitcher, Zach Albin, who was picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the 20th round. He currently attends the University of Connecticut at Avery Point.
A total of 23 players with high school and collegiate connections to Connecticut were taken of the four days of the MLB draft.
