WESTON, Conn. – Weston High School senior Emily Savage, a pole vaulter, keeps soaring to new heights.

Savage, a member of the Weston indoor track and field team, set a state record in pole vaulting last month. She was named The Weston Daily Voice Athlete of the Month for her achievement.

Savage’s highest jump this year is 12 feet, 7 inches, which she accomplished in winning the Class S title. She is ranked 12th in the nation.

She also won the State Open and South-West Conference titles. In January, she set the state record in the pole vault at 12 feet, 2 inches at the New Balance Games in New York. She rewrote the record in the Class S meet.

“My main goal is to get to the top five at the nationals,’’ Savage said after winning the State Open. The New Balance Indoor Nationals begin Friday in New York.

Her improvement this winter has been dramatic. She was third at the New England Championship meet in the outdoor season last June with a leap of 11 feet, 9 inches. She was fourth in the State Open outdoors last year at 11 feet, 0 inches, and won the Class M title at 11 feet, 7 inches.

She is the latest in a long line of excellent pole vaulters to emerge from Weston. Emily Ando (2010) and Erica Litvak (2011) also won state titles for the Trojans.
