WESTPORT, Conn. The eighth-grade Wreckers lost a good game with Darien, 13-7. The Wreckers started on the wrong foot but nearly came back to even the score in the second half.
Many injuries gave the Wreckers fewer options than usual, but this team responds to adversity. Jonathan Maragos, Bobby Becker and Matt Flinn were a force on defense, but Darien still scored on its first drive. The second Darien drive was stopped short when a streaking Sam Ahlgrim sacked the opposing quarterback on fourth down.
Westport's offense began to move the ball behind the running of Becker, Matty Johnson and Evan Gilland but ended behind at the half, 7-0.
The Westport cheerleaders inspired the crowd and the team throughout. Superb acrobatics by Jessy Nelson capped off a scintillating halftime performance.
Darien began the second half with a scoring drive that ate up the entire third quarter. Oliver Bub, Ryan Nicholas and Gilland made big stops in the drive. Maragos made a key tackle to deny Darien the extra point. The fourth quarter began with a 70-yard explosion by Gilland for a touchdown. Colin Hoy nailed the extra point kick to bring the Wreckers within six. The Westport defense made another big fourth down stop on Darien, but the clock expired before the offense could score again.
