EASTON, Conn. – Easton’s Christopher Thomas won his second straight Ironman 70.3 mile age-group World Championship on Sunday in Las Vegas.

Thomas finished the race in 4:21:56, beating runner-up Karl Wimmer of Germany by 2:55 in the 40-44 age group. The race includes a 1.2 mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run. Thomas was 47th overall in the field of 1,372 international athletes.

The race was decided in the final two legs. Thomas emerged from the water in 17th place, but posted the fastest time in his age group on the bike. He averaged 23.27 miles per hour and finished in 2:24.23.

Thomas, the owner of Personal Training Professionals in Southport, was even better on the run. He finished in 1:22:48, an average of 6:19 per mile. He was one of only two runners to crack 1 hour and 25 minutes for the 13.1 mile distance.

The victory establishes Thomas as one of the favorites for his age group in next month’s Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.  Last year, Thomas finished fourth overall and was the first American at the Ironman World Championships.
