Easton Community Center Aims To Keep Kids Active

EASTON, Conn. — The Easton Community Center will be a virtual Olympics this fall with basketball, conditioning, dodgeball and wrestling. Here is a partial list of classes offered for kids:

4th grade boys travel basketball tryouts: Main tryouts will be held at the community center, 364 Sport Hill Road, on Oct. 20 from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Players should arrive 15 minutes early to check in. An alternate tryout will be held 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 24.

Contact Billy Barrett at 203-459-9700 or billy@eastoncc.com for more information.

Core strength and conditioning: Are you having trouble in the fourth quarter? Does your team have trouble finishing games? This five-week conditioning course will help you build core strength and understand how your body works.

Each class provides a different perspective on everyday conditioning and body movement. Jumping jacks and push-ups are boring and ineffective. Every week, different exercises will be offered that improve flexibility, power strides and twitch muscle reaction. The curriculum combines isometric and plyometric concepts with strength and resistance exercises that will be beneficial and give every athlete a huge advantage for their age group.

Classes are as follows:

• Grades 3-5 co-ed: Saturdays from 3 to 4 p.m., five sessions from Oct. 22 to Nov. 19. Cost: members, $35; nonmembers, $45.

• Grades 6-8 coed: Saturdays from 4 to 5 p.m., five sessions from Oct. 22 to Nov. 19. Cost: members, $35; nonmembers, $45.

Gary Kuhn, a state-certified coach who coaches high school football, basketball and lacrosse, leads the workouts. You can register by phone at 203-459-9700; fax at 203-445-1798, or in person at the Easton Community Center

Dodgeball League: Dodgeball is a fast-paced game played with soft foam balls between two opposing teams that are trying to eliminate the other players while avoiding being hit themselves. If a ball is caught, then a team member is allowed back in the game and the person who threw it is out. Once a team has been totally eliminated, the round has ended. The best out of three rounds wins.

Dodgeball is coed, for ages 10 to 13, and there are eight sessions on Mondays from Oct. 24 to Dec. 19 from 4 to 5 p.m. Cost is $40 for members and $50 for nonmembers. There is no class Oct. 31.

Register early because there are limited spaces. Players can sign up individually or as a team.

Wrestling Club: "Scholastic folkstyle" wrestling is offered for boys and girls in first through eighth grades. All skill levels will be taught.

Using a wrestling-games-based approach, wrestlers will learn fundamental skills in a program designed to prepare beginners for competition and to enhance the level of expertise for those who are already competing. The last week of the season, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling — the two forms of wrestling in the Olympics — will be introduced.

Wrestling shoes are required for practice and competition. Headgear is required for competition and recommended for practice.
