Dragon Dashers Defy Snow to Race Along the Shore

WESTPORT – Saturday's surprise snowstorm wiped out most of the weekend athletic events on the calendar, but runners weren't deterred by a little snow and turned out for Sunday's Dragon Dash, a 5K run from Greens Farms Academy.

The numbers were down from previous years, but the 42 finishers enjoyed great running conditions. "The roads were clear, except for one small corner, and the sun was really warm," said Marty Schaivone, who directed the event.

Christopher Barrett of neighboring Fairfield proved most adept at covering the course, which treated runners to a spectacular view of Long Island Sound in the last mile. Barrett cross the line in 18:24, just bettering a six-minute mile pace, and 47 seconds ahead of fellow Fairfielder Josh McLevy.

Pascale Butcher of Southport, better known for her multisport exploits, was the first female finisher in 23:09, good for 12th place overall.
