DARIEN, Conn. – Darien native Rob Crane competed Monday morning in the first two of 10 races in the men's laser sailing competition in the London Olympics.
Crane has a lot of work ahead if he hopes to compete for a medal after finishing 39th overall in a field of 49 competitors. Crane finished the first race with a time of 59:55, 2:45 behind leader Juan Ignacio Maegli Aguero of Guatemala.
Crane got off to a better start in the second race, reaching the first marker only 26 seconds behind the leader. But things fell apart for him between the fourth and fifth mark, and he fell to 42nd overall in the race.
Sailors are given points at the end of each race based on what place they finished. The sailor with the lowest point total at the end of 10 races wins the gold. After two races, Crane trails overall leader Tom Slingsby of Australia by 74 points and is 66 points behind for a bronze medal.
The sailing events take place off the coast of Weymouth, England, which is about three hours southwest of London.
Crane returns to action at 9 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday. Sailing can be seen on NBC's Olympics website.
