WESTPORT, Conn Dariens boys soccer team scored early in the first half and went on to hand Staples its first loss, 1-0, in a Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference game Thursday in Darien.
The victory dropped the Wreckers to 7-1-2, while Darien improved to 8-1-2.
Eliot Helgans scored in the 11th minute for Darien, off an assist from Eric Kanigan. Goalie Jack Fisher made seven saves to record the shutout for the Blue Wave, while James Hickok had nine for the Wreckers.
Staples pressed for the equalizers in the second half, only to be rebuffed by a tight Darien defense and the solid goaltending of Fisher. Staples failed to score for the first time this year. It also marked Dariens first win over Staples since 1997.
What we lacked was someone who could snipe a goal, Staples coach Dan Woog said. Darien got theirs, we didnt. That was the difference today.
Staples returns to action Saturday when it hosts Fairfield Warde at 4 p.m. The Wreckers will celebrate their first Alumni Day, beginning at 3:15 p.m.
