Westons Bernard DAmato captured the Connecticut Amateur Friday with a resounding 8-and-6 victory over Nick Taylor in the 36-hole final at the Country Club of Waterbury.
DAmato, who plays out of Fairchild Wheeler, recently completed his freshman year at Princeton University. He took control of the match by winning six of seven holes, beginning on No. 11, in the morning round. DAmato finished the first 18 holes with a commanding 5-up lead.
He continued to build on his lead in the final round, and was 6-up after 23 holes. Taylor won the next two, but DAmato took the next three holes. He closed out the match with a birdie on the par-3 12th hole.
DAmato finished tied for sixth in qualifying after shooting 69-70. He needed 19 holes to win his second round match against Philip Perry. He sent that match into extra holes with a par to win the 18th. He won when Perry bogeyed the first sudden death hole.
