Concussion Safety Night Planned in Westport

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Concussion Safety Night for youth football and cheerleading coaches and parents will be held June 14 at Saugatuck Elementary School in Westport. The event is sponsored by Westport PAL and SportsCAPP.com. It will run from 7-9 p.m.

Coaches will get information on specific practice drills with lower concussion risks, recognition and proper response for possible concussions, new iPhone apps for coaches and equipment for players, information on concussion research and the concussion differences in boys and girls.

Speakers will include Norwalk’s Katherine Snedaker of SportsCAPP, which stands for Sports Concussion Awareness and Prevention program. She has been at the forefront of a movement to close a loophole in Connecticut laws that leave children in youth league sports vulnerable to insufficient protection when they suffer concussions. Westport PAL director Carm Roda will present new research outlining the reduction of concussions with specific steps, drills and techniques.

Two Fairfield County agencies involved in the medical field, Concussion Specialists of Connecticut and Performance Physical Therapy, will also attend the event. New technological advancements will be outlined to assist with concussion recognition.

An athletic trainer will also attend to answer questions on proper sideline management of concussions during games and practice. Coaches will be able to explore new concussion technologies.

Coaches will also hear from former Staples football player Chris Coyne, who had his football career cut short after suffering numerous concussions.

The seminar is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. No registration is required. Sponsors include Concussion Specialists of Connecticut, Performance Integrated Health, Galaxy Cookies, Battle Sports Science and the PAR Concussion Recognition and Response App. Coaches and parents interested in attending should register with Snedaker at pricesned@gmail.com or by calling (203) 984-0860.
