The Westport Police Athletic League has received a lot of local attention for its focus on educating parents and coaches about concussions. This weekend, the group will receive national attention from the national cable channel CNN.
Cameras and crew from CNN will be on hand for a practice of the Westport fifth-grade team Friday night and for its Fairfield County Youth Football League semifinal game Saturday as it hosts Wilton at P.J. Romano Field at 10:30 a.m.
Westport PAL has been one of the national leaders in education about and treatment of concussions. The group has instituted mandatory training for coaches and parents before the season begins to learn how to identify and treat concussions.
"It's pretty exciting for me to see a national media organization seeing some changes going on locally in youth sports,'' Westport PAL president Carm Roda said. "Hopefully, more and more people will take an active approach and keep kids safer from future brain trauma. When CNN looks at what we modified, they'll see you can still teach the game, be successful and keep kids safe without minimizing the sport. I think people get tied up on that, especially football, that we're weakening the sport. We're teaching them proper technique."
