Staples' baseball team is built around its superior pitching, but the Wreckers can swing the bats, too. Ryan Burke hit for the cycle and had five hits Monday, while David Speer collected his 20th career victory as Staples improved to 15-1 with a 16-6 win over Fairfield Ludlowe.
Burke also had seven RBIs for Staples (13-1 Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference). The Wreckers ripped 20 hits, as Jack Hennessy (four hits, four runs scored), Grant Moss (three hits, four RBIs), Brendan Bernstein (two hits, two RBIs), Colin McCarthy (two hits) and Jimmy Sikorski (two hits) also had big days at the plate.
Speer pitched into the seventh before getting relief help from Justin Honigstein. Speer struck out seven. Staples has a key game Wednesday against Greenwich (12-2 overall, 11-2), which currently is seeded second in the race for the eight playoff spots in the FCIAC. Game time is 4 p.m. at Staples.
