A familiar face will be missing from the Staples basketball lineup when the Wreckers open their season at Ridgefield. Point guard Frank Bergonzi, who averaged 12 points a game last season, will bypass his senior year on the court. Bergonzi will play soccer at Colgate University next fall.
"After the soccer season ended, I received an e-mail from my coach at Colgate and the strength and conditioning coach. It became clear to me I needed to get ready for next Aug. 14, when I report, and I couldn't do that and play FCIAC basketball,'' Frankie said. "I am going to the gym, lifting to get stronger and continuing to practice/play for my U18 Beachside Premier team. I just could not do both, so I made the tough decision not to play."
Staples does return Gabe Seidman, the team's leading scorer, and coach Colin Devine believes he has players who can step into the point guard role.
"It wasn't easy after being named captain and being a three-year starter at point,'' Frankie said. " But I know this is the right long-term decision, and soccer at Colgate will be a challenge."
Seidman, Jake Felman and Luke Yeager will be the captains for Staples. The Wreckers face a tough opening stretch, as they play Trinity Catholic on Friday and Bridgeport Central on Tuesday.
