Joel Barlow High School boys lacrosse coach John Distler wanted his team get off to a quick start in Monday's South-West Conference matchup against neighboring Weston. The Falcons did, and it was the difference in the game.
Barlow (9-0) built a 5-1 lead at halftime and went on to defeat the Trojans, 8-3, on Monday in Redding. Wyatt Tompkins paced Barlow with three goals and two assists. Robbie Palazzo scored two goals, while Drew Zangrillo, Conner Regan and Nolan Stauffer added single goals.
"We wanted to get up on them and make them play catch up,'' Distler said. "They had a lot of young guys, and they lost some players from last year. We thought if we got up on them we might be able to slow them down."
Tompkins scored with 14 seconds left in the first half to give Barlow a 5-1 lead. The play was even during a spirited second half. Barlow's first half lead was too much for the Trojans.
"It's always an intense game with them,'' Distler said. "Even though they have a lot of young players, they kept fighting. I was impressed with Weston. It's good to come out of this game with a win."
