WESTPORT, Conn. The Westport PAL Eighth Grade North football team stopped the Fairfield Wildcats, 20-16, in a Fairfield County Football League game Sunday at Fairfield Warde.
Westport scored on its second drive of the game. Behind the blocking of Jackson Ward, Bobby Becker, Harry Garber, Mac Barreca, Jack Schenck, Dakota Keating and Joseph Tuccinardi, Westports ground attack started strong. Sam Arciola, Jack Zapfel and Sam Ahlgrim provided solid run blocking for Matty Johnson, Evan Gilland and Ryan Nicholas all game.
Connor Adrian rumbled in to score from the 6 yard line at the end of the first quarter. The second TD came with over 9 minutes left in the half after a long run by Nicholas to the 1 yard line. The next offensive possession started well with a 50 yard strike from Gilland to Jack Griffin before it stalled. Westport ended the first half 12 yards away from the end zone.
Westport played strong defensively, led by by Matthew Flinn, Grant Moberg, Daniel Cozzi, Ward, Becker and Ray Niver. Jonathan Maragos, Grant Tobben, Brandon Schock and Oliver Bub also contributed for the defense, which did not allow Fairfield an offensive touchdown.
The Wreckers shut down Fairfields passing game and Gilland had two interceptions. His first set up a Nicholas TD with eight minutes left in the game.
