50th Edition Of Westport Series Leads Busy Weekend

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Weekend Warriors in Fairfield County have plenty of options, including the opening race of the 50th anniversary of the Westport Summer Series.

There is also a road race on Saturday in Norwalk, and triathlons Sunday in Stamford and Norwalk. Runners can also compete July 4 in the Four on the Fourth race Wednesday in New Canaan.

The Westport series begins with a 2.3-mile race beginning at 8 a.m. at Staples High School. The 10-race series is held every Saturday over progressively longer distances. The final race in the series is a 10-mile race Sept. 1.

The series exploded in popularity last year, with record or near-record entrants in nearly every event. The series includes a point system, with champions in men’s and women’s divisions crowned at the end of the series. Westport’s Luke McCambly and Wilton’s Mary Zengo were the overall champions in 2011.

Cranbury Elementary School in Norwalk will be the site of the second race in the Lightfoot Running Club’s five-race summer series. The five-mile race begins at 8 a.m. Larry Ikard of New Canaan won the men’s division in opening race, a 3-miler on June 16. Julie Heaphy of Norwalk was the first woman. The next race in the Norwalk series is a 7-miler July 14. The Lightfoot Running Club website has registration details.

Registration has closed for the KIC It Triathlon in Stamford, which begins at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at Cummings Beach in Stamford. A kids triathlon will be held Saturday in conjunction with the event. Also Sunday, Westport-based Team Mossman will conduct a half Ironman competition beginning at 6:30 a.m. at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. Athletes can register until 11:59 a.m. Friday.

The 30th edition of the Four on the Fourth begins at 9 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church in New Canaan. Runners can pre-register at the New Canaan New Balance store Saturday through Tuesday. Runners can also register on race day. David Cotton of Madison won last year’s race, while Nancy Clayton of New Canaan was the first woman. There were 339 finishers, making it one of the most popular holiday races in the state. Complete race information is available online .
