Staples linebacker Rob Gau and punter Jason Mawicke were named first team All-State on Wednesday by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.
Gau had 99 tackles and 23 assists to lead the Wreckers' defense, which allowed the fewest points in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference. Mawicke averaged 47 yards per punt, which is the second highest average in the state, according to the website MaxPreps.com . He also placed 10 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Four Staples players made the Class LL All-State team: defensive lineman Pat Murray, defensive backs Matt Yeager and Tyler Jacobs, and offensive lineman Mike Nicklas.
Besides Gau and Mawicke, other players from the FCIAC on the All-State team were Darien's Charlie Kunze, New Canaan wide receiver Kevin Macari, New Canaan offensive lineman Conor Hanratty, St. Joseph running back Tyler Matakevich, Ridgefield offensive lineman Tommy Jordan and Trumbull defensive back Phil Terio.
