The National Association for Music Education has designated March as “Music in Our Schools Month.” The annual Westport Music Festival is part of the monthly celebration. The festival will celebrate Westport’s Orchestras with the Westport Orchestra Festival 2014. The Westport Orchestra Festival Concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, in the Staples Gymnasium.
The Festival will feature the combined seventh and combined eighth grade orchestras from Bedford and Coleytown Middle Schools, the Staples Symphonic Orchestra and Staples Sophomore Orchestra strings.
Jonathan Yates, music director of the Norwalk Symphony and youth symphony programs, will work with Westport’s students as a guest conductor for the Festival. The Staples Orchestras music will include the Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25, by Bizet-Sarasate, featuring Staples Senior Violinist Katie Zhou, as well as the Danzon No. 2, by Arturo Marquez. Other short selections will be performed by the combined seventh and eighth grade strings.
Admission is free for the concert.
