WESTPORT, Conn. – Eleven seniors at Staples High School were selected as finalists in the 2012 Merit Scholarship Program. The students, Charlotte Breig, Max Gibson, David Katter, Zachary Lerangis, Michelle Mastrianni, Caitlin McVaney, Robert Perry, Matthew Silver, Priyanka Subramanian, Gabrielle Wimer, and Constance Zhou, have a chance to earn one of 8,400 National Merit Scholarship awards, together worth more than $36 million.

These students were among the approximately 1.5 million students nationwide who, as juniors, took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test to enter the program.

In order to move on as finalists, students must  have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance.  Once selected as semifinalists, the students then had to submit a scholarship application, which included an essay detailing his or her participation and leadership in school and community activities.

The Staples finalists are now among a group of about 15,000 finalists nationwide. Final scholarship winners will be notified as early as March.
