Westport Students Earn Top Awards At State History Day

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Students from Westport and Weston were among the state's winners in the History Day in Connecticut contest.

Students in grades 6-12 worked for months to develop history projects for their Regional Contests. Those who placed in the top three in each category moved on to the state contest last weekend at Central Connecticut State University. The state contest determined who would represent Connecticut at the National History Day Contest in June.

The theme for this year’s contest was Rights and Responsibilities in History. Students were able to compete in five different categories, including Exhibits, Performances, Websites, Documentaries or Research Paper. The competition is broken up into Senior Division (grades 9 to 12) and the Junior Division (grades 6 to 8).

Winners from Fairfield County included:

Senior Division

  • Maddy Fodor and Angela Yu, Staples High School, First Place in Group Exhibit: Prudence Crandall.
  • Douglas Raigosa, Anna Eichhorn, Susan Zec
  • Staples High School, Second Place in Group Exhibit: The Interstate Highway Act.
  • Aaron Samuels: Staples High School, Third Place in Individual Documentary: The Migration From and To: A Jewish History of Waterbury.
  • Georgia Fox: Staples High School, Second Place in Senior Paper: The Great Migration.

Junior Division

  • Roman Scavone and Alex Nordlinger, Weston Middle School, First Place in Group Documentary: Gun Rights. Also Bill Brayfield Award for First Place Junior Group Documentary.
  • Brendan Moore, Tobey Bill, Beck Reiferson, Weston Middle School, Second Place in Group Documentary: The Pentagon Papers

Special Awards

  • Outstanding Entry in the Arts: Nicolas Ribolla, Staples High School, Columbia Records: The Story of the CT Music Industry
  • Outstanding Entry Related to Law: Emma Lederer and Caroline Suppan, Staples High School,Second Amendment
