Westport Seeks Back-To-School Supply Donations

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Department of Human Services needs help in supporting Westport students of all ages. The department is gearing up for its annual back-to-school program and is in need of donated school supplies.

The program, which runs solely on community donations, provides new backpacks and school supplies, including pencils, pens, notebooks, calculators and more, to students of income-eligible families in town, said Barbara Butler, director of Human Services. The program also provides clothing and gift cards to Payless and Athletic Shoe Factory, allowing families to buy their children new shoes.

Last year, 213 Westport students from 109 income-eligible families received back-to-school supplies as well as Payless gift cards, Butler said. More families are expected to participate in this year’s program, which runs from Aug. 6 to Aug. 13.

The program serves children from elementary to high school. The following supplies are needed:

? Backpacks (cute, small ones for kids and larger ones for Staples students)

? 1-subject notebooks

? 3- and 5-subject notebooks

? Binders of all sizes

? Filler paper (college-ruled and wide-ruled)

? Subject dividers

? Pencil pouches/boxes

? 2-pocket folders

? Erasers

? Pencils

? Pens

? Crayons

? Highlighters

? Scissors

? Rulers

? Memo books/assignment books

? Pencil sharpeners

? Colored pencils

? Glue sticks

? Inexpensive calculators

Donations of new school supplies can be dropped off from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Human Services Department office, Room 200 at Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave.

Residents wishing to help by making a tax-deductible monetary donation can mail a check to the Westport Department of Human Services, 110 Myrtle Ave., Westport, CT 06880. Checks should be made payable to Town of Westport/DHS Family Programs, with “Backpacks” listed on the memo line.
