WESTPORT, Conn. Students, parents and staff of Westports Saugatuck Elementary School recently raised $4,500 for Save the Children, an international nonprofit based in Westport, during the schools 10th annual Circle of Caring walk-a-thon.
The U.S. Agency for International Development will match the schools donation three times, making the total donation to Save the Children $18,000, the school announced in a press release.
In conjunction with the May 31 walk, Jason Chmura, a representative from Save the Children, spoke at a student assembly. During his visit, he talked about the nonprofits programs and worldwide relief efforts.
Since the Circle of Caring walk-a-thon was created a decade ago, the Saugatuck Elementary School community has responded to Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in Thailand, earthquakes in Japan and Haiti and to Save the Children's efforts to combat malaria in Africa.
