Westport School Gets New Principal

Bob Buckley, the first and only principal to serve at Saugatuck Elementary School since it opened in 2002, is stepping down. But Monday night, the Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Julie Droller to take over.

Droller, currently the principal at Veterans Park Elementary School in Ridgefield, will begin work in Westport on July 1. Buckley's last day is June 30.

Buckley announced his retirement in January via an email to parents. "Needless to say, making a decision to retire is not an easy thing to do," Buckley said in the email. "I will greatly miss the students, faculty, staff, administrators and parents of Saugatuck and Westport."

In other news, the school board voted unanimously not to ask the Board of Finance to restore the $250,000 that it cut from the education budget March 24.

"I am always reluctant not to seek restoration because the budget that we finally put together is one which always represents fiscal prudence, and this year is no different," Superintendent Elliott Landon told the board. "However, I also recognize that the town is in a difficult situation. At this point, I'm suggesting we live with the cut and sacrifice within our budget. I will do everything in my power to ensure we have no reduction in instructional programs or instructional services."
