WESTPORT, Conn. Westporters, take pride. The school district was ranked No. 1 across the state at the high school and middle school levels by the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now.
Known as ConnCAN, this nonprofit education advocacy group issues report cards annually for public schools across the state based on student achievement on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance tests. This year's report cards, released Thursday, were issued to more than 1,000 schools in more than 160 districts.
Staples High School received an A- on its report card and was ranked No. 1 out of 190 high schools in the state, with 87 percent of students meeting or exceeding state goals. Last year, the school was ranked No. 5, with 84.8 percent of students meeting or exceeding state goals.
This put Westport as the No. 1 high school district out of 134 districts across the state. Last year, the district was ranked fourth.
Out of 298 middle schools, Coleytown Middle and Bedford Middle schools were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, and both schools received A's on the report card. At Coleytown, 94.4 percent of students met or exceeded state goals. That's up from last year when the school was ranked No. 25 out of 387, with 91 percent of students meeting or exceeding goals.
At Bedford, 94.3 percent of students met or exceeded state goals. Last year, the school was ranked No. 31 of 387, with 90.8 percent.
With both schools in the top spots this year, Westport came in as the No. 1 middle school district of 173.
At the elementary school level, Coleytown Elementary was ranked the highest in the district, and Green's Farms ranked the lowest. Overall, Coleytown earned an A and was ranked No. 13 out of 571 schools, with 92.1 percent of students meeting goals. Last year, 91.9 percent of students met or exceeded goals.
Coming in at second is Long Lots, which received an A- and was tied at No. 42 of 571 with four other schools. This year, 87.5 percent of students met or exceeded goals. This is down slightly from last year when 88.4 percent of students met or exceeded goals.
Kings Highway was next, tied at No. 43 with West District School in Farmington. The school earned an A- with 87.4 percent of students meeting goals.
Saugatuck Elementary earned a B+ and was tied at No. 73 with Alcott School in Wolcott, with 83.2 percent of students meeting goals. That percentage is down from last year when 87.5 percent of students met or exceeded goals.
Green's Farms was tied with four other schools at No. 94. It received a B+ with 80.4 percent of students meeting goals. Overall, the district was ranked No. 17 of 163 districts for elementary schools.
