Westport School Bus Drivers Set To Strike Monday

WESTPORT, Conn. – If your child normally takes the bus to school, you’ll need to find another way to get him or her there on Monday as school bus drivers in Westport are set to move forward with a strike, Superintendent Elliott Landon said Sunday afternoon in an email to parents.

“It is with regret that I must inform you that the Dattco bus drivers, late this morning, voted to reject the contract settlement that was agreed upon by Dattco management and the Union leadership,” Landon wrote in the email.

Another effort will be made to avoid the strike, but for now, Landon said parents need to make alternative arraignments to get their children to and from school. “If the situation should change, I will inform you immediately,” Landon wrote.

On Thursday, Landon informed parents that a strike was possible . In an effort to minimize disruption to students’ schedules, parents should try to have their children at school about 30 minutes before the normal start time, Landon said in Thursday’s email to parents.

“Staff members will be in each of our schools to accommodate and protect the safety of those students who may arrive earlier than their usual arrival time,” Landon wrote Thursday.

Also, all before and after school activities at the elementary schools will be canceled, Landon said.

To accommodate increased traffic at the schools, Landon said parents will be able to use the school bus entrances, as well as the parent drop-off areas. The Westport Police Department will also provide additional traffic officers in an effort to ease congestion, Landon said.

Both Landon and police Capt. Sam Arciola urge parents to form cars pools in an effort to reduce traffic to and from the schools.
