WESTPORT, Conn. Westport's Staples High School students continue to rake in high scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, better known as the SAT. Data from the College Board shows the average 2011 SAT scores of Staples students far surpass the state averages.
In Westport, 406 Staples students took the SATs this year. The high school's mean test scores were 581 in reading, 599 in math and 595 in writing. The average test scores in the state were 509 in reading and 513 in both math and writing.
Over the past two years, SAT averages at Staples have remained steady. In 2010, the school's average reading score was 584, just three points higher than the current average. In 2009, the average was 596.
The average math score in 2010 was 597, which is a two-point reduction over the current year. In 2009, the average was 606.
In the writing category, the average score in 2010 was 596just one point higher than this yearand in 2009, it was 605.
The national averages were 497 for reading, 514 for math and 489 for writing. The maximum score for each section of the SAT is 800 points, making the entire test worth 2,400 points.
