Westport Ranked Top School District In State By Niche

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The school districts in Fairfield County got high overall marks in the state — and seven were ranked among the Top 10 in a report by Niche.com.

Nearly all of the school districts in Fairfield County were among the Top 100 in the state. Westport led the rankings, followed by New Canaan, Greenwich and Weston. Darien at sixth, Wilton at eighth and Ridgefield at 10th were also among the Top 10.

The list is based on criteria such as academics and outcomes. Niche, a website for researching schools, used a variety of factors, including SAT/ACT scores, student-teacher ratio, the quality of colleges students consider and reviews from students and parents for its ranking.

Westport received an A+ grade from Niche and received an A+ in nine categories -- Academics, Teachers, Clubs and Activities, College Readiness, Administration, Food, Sports, Resources and Facilities and Health and Safety. Westport's only flaw, according to Niche, was its Diversity, where the school received a C+.

New Canaan had similar scores, getting an A (instead of an A+) in Clubs and Activities. It also received a C+ for Diversity.

Greenwich received A+ grades Academics, Teachers, Food, College Readiness, Health and Safety and Resources and Facilities. It also had the highest diversity grade, a B+, among the top three schools.

Weston received A+ grades in each category, but got a C- for its Diversity grade from Niche.

Darien and Wilton also received A+ or A grades in nine of the 10 categories. Darien got a C- Diversity grade, and Wilton received a C.

Ridgefield received eight A+ or A grades. Niche graded the district a C- in Diversity and B+ in Sports.

Newtown received A+ grades in every category except Diviersity (C) and Food (A). Monroe also had nine A+ or A grades, and got a C+ in Diversity. Fairfield was graded an A- in Food and C+ in Diversity.

Trumbull received A+ or A grades in nine categories (a B- in Diversity). Brookfield received A or A- grades in six categories. Other grades were:  Food (C), Diversity (C) and Administration (B+) and Resources and Facilities (B). Bethel had A+ or A grades in eight categories and strong grades in Diversity (B+) and Teachers (B+).

New Fairfield took a C in Diversity. Stamford had an A+ grade in Diversity, and an A in College Readiness. The remaining grades fell into the B+, B or B- range.

Shelton received an A- in Sports, and the rest of the grades were in the B range.

Norwalk received a C+ for Academics, an A for Clubs and Activities and an A- for Sports.

Danbury's teachers received a C+ grade, and Academics also graded out to a C. All of the other measures fell in the A and B range. Stratford took C+ grades for Academics, Teachers and Food. Other grades fell in the A and B range.
